buff-a-thon

July 2nd, 2004

We started with Season 2 earlier this week (sunday or monday, I don’t remember.) buffy, season 2 etc is hooked and we are now on disk two of season 4. Currently he’s playing catch-up… We found season one laying around.

I got into buffy way too late, and I think I never watched it because it was possibly on in the same time-slot as Gilmore Girls. So I’ve seen several episodes, but only in reruns.

Girlfriend in a Coma

Douglas Coupland, Girlfriend in a Coma
This one was suggested by etc.

I had trouble getting into it at first because of what I call Coupland’s “modern” tone. It’s not traditional. It’s not boring. It’s probably a good thing that I had to open my reading brain to hear something that I wouldn’t normally have selected, because, you see, this was a great book.

The girlfriend is in a coma. She gives birth to a child while in the coma. The kid grows into a teenager while her mother lays in said coma. This has potential to be a really cheesy story, but it turns out quite good. I read most of the book in fear that the ending would be one of those cop-out endings where everyone wakes up and it was all a bad dream. But no, it was better than that. Somewhere around 2/3rds of the way through the story turns Really Weird. Coupland avoids Really Shitty as he trudges out of Really Weird.

In my 3rd grade book report voice, “This book was a really good book. I really liked. it.”

If I had written this sooner after finishing it, I’m sure I would have more to say about it.

The Guardian

July 2nd, 2004

Nicholas Sparks' The Guardian While on our honeymoon we hit Rainbow Books and I picked up my first Nicholas Sparks book. Normally I stay away from Sparks – I thought he was too gushy for my taste. I mean, I loved the movie version of Message in a Bottle, and I enjoyed A Walk to Remember (again, the movie,) but neither were stories I care to read… The happy ending mushy romance thing doesn’t turn me on so much.

Maybe I was wrong.

Finished reading the The Guardian within two days of returning home… I couldn’t put it down and really enjoyed the dog aspect of the story. Although it wasn’t private island good, I do look forward to reading more of Sparks’ work.
