More than you ever wanted to know about this site

Or how this got to be the best online journal EVAR. (That was a joke.)

The domain.
In June of 2000 I purchased the domain olddomain.com, with the intent of blending fact and fiction to escape the grime-coated life I was leading. Thus the name, oldDOMAIN. I have since come to the realization that I’m no good with the telling of stories that never actually happened. I can’t write made-up stuff to save my ass. Fairytale princess land fluff is all I come up with. So now the domain name really doesn’t apply, but it sticks like the shoyu I had to clean out of the fridge the other day.

The journal.
The journal started before the domain existed (3/2000,) thanks to internettrash. Like many online journals it was started for one reason: I was going through a breakup and didn’t know how to deal with it. Eventually the breakup madness ended, I forgot that that was the whole point of the journal and although sporadically, I kept writing.

After I bought the domain I decided it was time to join the cool kids and install stephen deken’s “The Journaling Script.” Stephen has since stopped updating the script because he has better things to do. The journal went through a few incarnations after the journaling script. In search of more cool toys and flexibility, I tried out Noah Grey’s greymatter which at the time I was too technically handicapped to understand. Specifically, I couldn’t get the templates to look the way I wanted them to look.

Enter Moveable Type. You know where the site is, I don’t need to link it. I stuck with moveable type for a long time. During this time the site grew to have a blog-type-thing and at some points in time, a photo gallery-ish thing. In May of 2004 MT changed their “licensing policy,” causing me to change my “personal publishing system” to Not MT.

That brings us to now. I am wordpress’ bitch. I’m rather happy with it. Aside from the fact that it’s all php-happy, and I am completely limited in any sort of understanding of php, I love it. You shouldn’t hate something because you don’t understand it. For all you know it works better than the stuff you do understand. (I’m pretty sure this does work pretty well.) Anyhow thanks to my sexy husband who knows how to make things work, I don’t fear the wordpress.

All the rest.
Did you know that the lyrics to the Gilligan’s Island theme song were not always the same? The part that goes “The professor and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan’s Isle,” at one point was “And all the rest were here on Gilligan’s Isle.” It’s like the professor and Mary Ann weren’t slated to be regular characters. Or something.

All images on the site were taken by me with various cameras…

Flowers, the header image in /journal was taken some time in 2003 at Pike’s Place Market in Seattle. Camera: Lomo LC-A.
