wtf is a clementine?
Today I’m reading through other holidaily entries and I come across this and this and I’m thinking to myself “self, wtf is a clementine?” Because really… I’ve never seen one.
I mean sure I’ve heard the word before. It’s not like I grew up under a rock or something. On a rock, yes, but not under. But to be completely honest when I did hear the word “clementine” it was in reference to that song. Where she’s lost and not forgotten. Or something. Recently I’ve been reading more and more about the clementines. They were mentioned in a forum I frequent, and using context clues (“I ate ALL THE CLEMENTINES!”) I gathered that they were cookies. Seriously.
So I read jette’s clementine entry and realize that they aren’t cookies, they are something akin to an orange. Then I think “ok maybe it’s regional – like in some parts of the world they just call some type of orange thing a clementine, but in real life they are cookies.” Stuck on the cookie theory for no reason at all. My brain works really strangely sometimes…
After my sexy husband (let’s just call him msh from now on, ok?) came home from work, we went to the store. Walking through the fruit section we picked up a box of mandarins. Plopped them into the cart. I asked him if he knew what clementines were. I’m not the only one! He had no idea. Now the thing to note here is that mandarins have been heavily in season in these parts for maybe a month now. Whenever you walk into the supermarket there are little boxes of them for sale at really good prices. We love them because the skin comes off so nice and easily. And they taste sweet and yummy. Mmmm. Plus they aren’t too big. Sometimes oranges can be too big – by the time you finish half of it, you’re tired of the taste. Not so with the mandarin orange. And because of its size it tucks neatly into your pockets. If it weren’t for the skin that you have to discard, they are the perfect travel snack.
We both dumbfoundedly stared at the box of mandarins thinking quietly to ourselves, not really wanting to share that we secretly thought they might be something like mandarins. Like maybe mandarins grown in the south are called clementines. But we pretty much made that up, so we didn’t want to start spreading supermarket rumors right there in the Co-op. We brought home our box of mandarins and made our taco night dinner and now I’m sitting here in front of the computer and just could not let go of the fact that I have no idea at all what a clementine is.
As a public service, I will now share my newfound knowledge with you: the clementine is a seedless mandarin.

Thanks Robyn for this one. Cats really are smart! I may have something to worry about here. Oscar and Mayer have not yet seen a Christmas tree, as we skipped the holiday last year, John Grisham style.

This is really very cute. Your secret Christmas name – it ensures that Santa will know who he’s dealing with. It’s a little suspicious that the names are english words, but I guess Santa speaks english. Even in Japan.
