Clapotis
I took an extended break from knitting the mariah and whipped up this shawl/scarf/wrap. The pattern was knitty’s clapotis which I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. The only problem with the original is that it would have run me around sixty bucks. US. That’s like at least eighty in Canadian. Sure the Lorna’s Laces is “buttery soft and a pleasure to work with,” as all the people who did use the suggested yarn commented, but being unemployed and basically broke, I couldn’t justify spending eight bucks on a scarf. No one needs an eighty dollar scarf, you know?
So since mariah was being a pain in the butt with the hood that didn’t fit at all, I took my frustrations for a yarn hunt. We (the frustrations and I) went to Gina Brown’s in search of some nice variegated and cheap yarn. There wasn’t any. But there was some 100% wool from Briggs and Little.
If you read KR, you know that 100% wool isn’t what people think of as an ideal Clapotis yarn. But I’m not really one to go jumping off cliffs with the rest of the crowd. Plus at five bucks a skein, you really can’t go wrong. A little frizz isn’t going to KILL the dropped stitches. (No offense to Knitter’s Review folk, but I just can’t afford to be an elitist knitter.)
Anyhow, I have been recently informed that it is bedtime and the story of the clapotis will have to wait until tomorrow.
*** And now is tomorrow. Not only am I picking up the story, but I have added a module to my drupal install that allows for insertion of inline images. So far so good. This will be the test entry, so bear with me.

It looks okay, but I’m sure we can improve on that. Anyhow, on with the clapotis. It took about a week to knit. The wool wasn’t the easiest to drop, but it did drop nicely with a little bit of tugging. I do have to say that the pattern is perfect and easy to understand. Since I made it I have not put the poor thing down. Yay clapotis!

So I did my clapotis in Briggs and Little. On the same day that I picked up that yarn, I also picked up three skeins of Custom Woolen Mills 2 ply mule something or other. No, it doesn’t come off a mule. It’s wool. Just today I decided that my next project will be something out of the CWM stuff that I picked up. So I hand rolled my skein and hey! It’s softer than the B&L. Why didn’t I notice that when I bought this stuff? Now I want another clapotis. So I was thinking I could pick up some undyed stuff and make my own pretty variegated clapotis.
But that isn’t the point of this post. Since it has a completely different feel, I decided to do some test swatching. Also I’m curious to see if this stuff felts at all.
Here are some measurements so I know forevermore the results of my scientific experimentation:
B&L: 9sts/2″, 12 rows/2″
CWM: 9sts/2″, 13 rows/2″;
So they are pretty close. I’m thinking CWM would be smaller if I swatched more. Both were done on a continuous piece, on sz 8 needles. Now I’m going to do some wet tests.
The entire swatch measures 5″ long and 4″ wide.
