It Should Contain the Poop
I used to be really good about writing regularly in here. I’d say “time to write something,” and then I’d sit down and pick a topic out of thin air and write about it. It’s been years since I’ve been able to do that, but I’m a fan of the “if I really put my mind to it, I can do it,” mentality.
So here we go.
I’m knitting a soaker. Now hush. Before you start getting all disgusted with how domestic I’ve become, you need to know how exciting this soaker thing is! See this baby of mine, he wears cloth diapers. True, if you inspect the photos you will notice that he was exposed to disposeable diapers in the hospital, but I swear to you, that was the only time! So anyhow he wears cloth diapers. So far we’ve been using the infant sized prefolds along with a wrap. (When I say “wrap” I mean those things that non cloth diapering parents like to call “plastic pants.” They aren’t plastic anymore.) We have a couple of different wraps – the first time I ordered diapers, I had no idea what I was doing, so I ordered different things to try out. The wraps we have are mostly Bummis Super Whisper wraps (they come in really cute prints.) We also have a Stacinator fleece wrap which works great, but I’m still trying to deal with the whole “wicking” thing… (I don’t suppose I should be mentioning this, but we used to have a Stacinator wool wrap that was the most wonderous wrap in the world, but someone threw it in the wash with the diapers, and if you know anything about wool, you know that for the most part, you can’t put those in the laundry.)
Anyhow. The Bummis started leaking. I’ve since read up on leaking Bummis, and I’m currently testing out the Nikwax treatment thing, (however did we survive before the internet?) but have yet to glean the results from my scientific testing. So when the Bummis started leaking I lost faith in them and decided that since the destroyed wool wrap was so wonderful, I should figure out some other alternative that didn’t involve spending $30 per wrap. I kid you not!
Enter the knitted soaker. It sure is a good thing I taught myself to knit. These soakers go for $30-$50 on the internet! They are supposed to work wonderfully, PLUS you can also make these things they call “longies” which are basically knitted pants, but because they are knit out of wool, they are designed to work in place of the wrap.
So I made my first soaker last week and now I’m working on my first pair of pants. A photo would be awesome right now, wouldn’t it?
